Student Life & Challenges...

Students can sometimes find returning to education a challenge. Failing to keep up with the pace, is not always down to procrastination or laziness; there may be other factors that have not been previously addressed. ⠀

“I’m finding it hard to focus and read through my course text books and class notes”.

“I’m struggling to keep up with my class, there’s too much reading and written assignments required for this course”⠀

I hear this often in my role as student support officer from the adult learners I support. A student’s ability to keep up with the lessons, assignment submission, planning and time management should not be judged. The interesting thing I have discovered, behind the challenges to keep up; there may be a case of an undiagnosed Specific Learning Need ( such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD) gone unnoticed or forgotten especially when there are periods of time out of education. ⠀

Having a Specific Learning Need is a major factor that can affect an individual’s ability to read fluently, understand and plan ahead.⠀A long time out of education or in a job role that does not require the use of certain skills can cause past educational anxieties to be overlooked. Notwithstanding these should not be the factors that prevent a return to education as a mature student.

At ECC we embrace diversity and inclusion. We employ different teaching methodologies and resources to encourage learner engagement. Our individualised approach to teaching and learning helps to make the challenges learners face, more manageable. Our focus is to empower students to achieve their career/educational goals and targets.⠀
