My 3 Memory Tips...

Starting a course is one of easiest moves for many of the students I work with. The reality of student life kicks in when the 1st submission or exam date is looming. Panic and fear rises and for some the fear of not knowing how to study or write an assignment can be daunting. During submission week one, that’s when I noticed a dip in student attendance and engagement.⠀

During the student induction process, I have the opportunity to discuss with new learners the challenges they may encounter leading up to the first few assignment deadlines. The induction process gives the opportunity to explore learning needs and challenges that may arise, whilst using real life examples of how previous students overcame their challenges and went on to succeed.

Open and honest communication with academic staff and student support services is very important. At ECC we have dedicated and qualified staff on hand to help you to identify your own unique way of learning, learning style(s) and develop your study skills and resources.⠀

“ A problem shared is a problem halved”⠀

Here are 3 of my Top Tips for improving your memory while studying:⠀

Visual - In order to remember things, many people need to visualize the information they are studying. Try to pull up a mental image of what it is you are trying to remember. It might also help to draw your own charts or figures, or utilize colors and highlighters to group related ideas in your notes.⠀

Write it down - Writing things down creates oxygenated blood flow to areas of your brain that are responsible for your memories and literally exercises those brains parts.⠀

Teach someone else - Reading material out loud has been shown to significantly improve memory of the material. Expanding further upon this, idea is the fact that psychologists have found that by having students teach new concepts to others, it helps to enhance understanding and recall. Why not teach new concepts and information to a friend or study partner, and you might find you remember the information a lot better.⠀
